The emergency situation which prompted Discovery's early release from drydock now successfully resolved, Admiral Gardner informs Captain Curtis that he sees no reason to call the ship back, and grants her permission to officially begin the Discovery's mission of exploration. Setting a course along a route for which they hold no Vulcan star charts for, the crew discover an M class planet so beautiful it must have come from one of the new movies chronicling the Enterprise's missions - with far more glamour and flair than the reality of them.

Strangely, the planet is littered with hulks of crashed starships - some centuries old - with no apparent cause for their crash landing. As teams spread out across the planet in order to study both it and its mysterious starship graveyard, tensions seem to start to get unusually high not just with the ground teams, but with the crew aboard Discovery as well. Could there be some sort of effect in the region of the planet which causes the crew to lose their minds? Could Discovery suffer the same fate as the hulks of starships past? The crew must fight through their heightened emotions in order to get to the bottom of things, and save their new home from an early end.
