Deep Space 19 is the Federation designation given to the alien space station discovered in 2388 by the Starship Endeavour in the Gamma Hriolis sector. The station is located in neutral space, but is close enough to both the Federation and Tholian borders to cause concerns for either party should the station be occupied with belligerent intent.

A portion of one of the station's upper tower structures has been sectioned off from the remainder of the station via a series of sealed blast doors and Federation-constructed containment fields. These sections have had the environmental controls altered to make them habitable on a long-term basis for the Tholians who share residence of the station under the treaty amendments negotiated by Captains Byrne and MonRoe shortly after Starfleet's occupation of the station began. These sections of the station have come to be known colloquially amongst the station's crew as the "Tholian Enclave".

History

Distant Past

Very little is known about the origins of the station; its designation are not even known. However, scans of the facility indicate that it has been abandonned for many thousands of years, and was constructed perhaps thousands of years prior to that. Starfleet's primary goal aboard the station is to study its origins and its creators.

Federation Residence

Starfleet first discovered the station in 2388 after the USS Endeavour detected a faint power signal whilst on a routine border patrol. The crew investigated, and were able to trace the source of the location to an unclaimed system in the Gamma Hriolis Sector. The system was uninhabited and generally unremarkable, except for the large station orbiting with the asteroid belt near one of the system's barren planets.

Whilst studying the station and working to bring it to a state where they could move within it without the use of EV suits and mine the datacores for information about the station and its builders, Starfleet contacted the Endeavour's captain, and ordered that the station become a Federation deep space outpost, designated as DS19, and that Captain Byrne transfer his command from the Endeavour to the station until a relief was sent.

Shortly following this, the station's newly-operational sensors detected incoming Tholian ships, instigating a stand-off between the Federation station occupiers and the small flotilla of Tholian web-ships. After the arrival of the USS Antarctic, Captains Byrne and MonRoe were able to successfully convince the Tholians to agree to a peaceful arrangement, in return for the Tholians occupying a small section of the station and receiving unedited copies of all scientific and engineering data regarding the station and its former inhabitants.

Towards the end of the year, whilst Captain Byrne was on an away mission and the Antarctic - which was still orbiting the station providing assistance - had sent its senior staff away on another mission via runabouts, the station crew tripped a security protocol in the compromised systems, which caused the station's reactor and weapons systems to begin firing off excess thermonuclear energy randomly, quickly destroying one of the Tholian ships and scattering all others nearby until the crew were able to cut the station's power, putting the estimates on having the station fully up-and-running back by weeks, but saving the surrounding ships. It also enabled the crews to spend time working on removing any other similar or degraded security and safety protocols from the station's computer banks.

Following the return from his away mission, Captain Byrne was informed that Captain Joseph Archbald would be succeeding him as station commander, and upon handing over command, Byrne and the Endeavour - with the crew remaining who didn't stay to become a permanent part of the station's compliment - left to return to Federation space.

Location

Location of Deep Space 19 in relation to the Federation and Tholian borders
The location of the star that Deep Space 19 orbits has been the root of the conflict between the Tholians and the Federation over the station since the crew of the USS Endeavour were first able to restore power to the facility's systems, thus making it more readily visible on Tholian sensor scans. Located roughly 40 light years from both the Tholian and Federation borders, the station is situated ideally to serve as a staging ground for one power to begin annexing the outer fringes of the other's territory, to enclose within their own borders. To the Galactic East of the system there exists no data; neither power has committed any manned exploration of that region of space, and the station would serve as an ideal staging area in order to conduct such an expedition.

Station Layout

Orthographical schematic of Deep Space 19
Deep Space 19 is primarily composed of a series of cylindrical tower structures, of various sizes, clustered together with the longest at the centre of the formation - giving the appearance of tapering at either end of the station. The structures are all interlinked and cannot be separated from each other, and there is a complex infrastructural scaffold in place which holds the station together as one entity. The length of these structures and their positioning relative to the other structures are not uniform, and to the casual observer would appear almost random.

Just below the central line of the station is a flat ring structure, with a diameter similar to that of a Cardassian Nor-class station's docking ring. This ring is affixed to the main superstructure of the station by seven randomly spaced spokes, each three decks thick and enabling transport between the ring and the station. Some of these spokes appear to be of a thru-deck design, allowing small vehicles or even shuttlecraft to travel down the length of them.

From the outer edge of this ring span numerous other tapered rectangular structures, which perform a variety of functions. Many are equipped with a series of magnetic clamps on the end, in addition to airlocks and connection hoses for refuelling or extracting waste from vessels, and Starfleet engineers have modified the connections on many of these to serve as docking ports for larger Federation starships. Other protrusions seem to be cargo bays which are externally accessible, with some being completely bare. Starfleet presumes that these protrusions may have been designed with modularity in mind; allowing a station commander to have each one configured for a variety of tasks, from traffic control to state rooms, or any other feasible purpose. Still more of these protrusions have yet to be fully catalogued by Federation officers.

The station is equipped with numerous power cores, each capable of powering the section of the station they are located within autonomously, but their capabilities are limited, and they appear to have been designed to act as a back-up power source only. The station's primary power source is a large, spherical power core located at the centre of the station's mass, along the same level as the docking ring in relation to the 'top' and 'bottom' peaks of the station's superstructure. The power control room itself consists of numerous decks, with the power core spanning each, creating a multi-level room for the monitoring and maintenance of the enormous device.

The lower section of the station, whilst shorter than the upper section (as defined by the positioning of the docking ring), is the least explored portion of the station, as scans made by the USS Endeavour showed that much of the station's critical areas were likely to be situated either at the centre of mass or in the upper section; an assertion which was confirmed when Starfleet technicians were able to download a portion of the station's schematics from the on-board computer.

Crew

At the inception of the station's occupation by Starfleet, Captain Benjamin Byrne was appointed as acting station commander, temporarily transferring his command from the USS Endeavour. Many of the ship's senior staff also took up comparable positions aboard the station for the duration of Byrne's command, including Lt. Commander Ballard, who took up the first officer position, and managed the coordination of much of the efforts to bring the station up to operational status.

A number of the ship's crew either chose to remain aboard the station or were ordered to permanently transfer by Starfleet Command when the Endeavour resumed her mission.
