Childhood

Early Years

Born as Mecatl Yolotl (Pronounced Mee-ka Yolot) in 2356 to Erza Qian and Nelli Yolotl on Earth, Mecatl's mother was a joined Trill working at [[Starfleet Medical]], while his father, Nelli, was was a Human of Native Central American decent. While they lived primarily on Earth, there were times when his mother would be sent across the Federation on assignment, and as such, it was not uncommon for him not to see her for weeks, even months at a time. Compounding this, his father, whom still shared a bond with his family, would often send him stay with his families clan for a time whenever his mother would leave. This of course, led him to develop a psychological developmental condition called "Reactive Attachment Disorder", or RAD.

As he grew older, he began to display signs of both artistic brilliance in the form of music, as well as a detachment from those around him. Often described as a "Lone Wolf" in his younger days by his peers, he showed no qualms about his isolation. In fact, during one of his trips to his extended family, his paternal grandmother gave him a second name, "Tlaloc" (Pronounced Tal-ock) as he got older, as per their clan's tradition. However, by the time he'd reached his teenage years, tragedy struck when his father, Nelli, was killed in a shuttle accident. This forced his mother to take on the role as his full-time primary care-giver for the first time in 2369 when he was thirteen, though she still utilized her late-husband's family often, since Mecatl seemed to have stronger bonds with them.

Becoming Joined

Just before the beginning of the Dominion War, Mecatl's mother Erza took an assignment onboard an Excelsior-Refit class starship; the USS Byzantium as its Chief Medical Officer, and rather than leaving her son behind with his father's clan on Earth, or sending him back to the Lazaxa Colony to live with her parents, she instead took him with her. This was primarily at the behest of her colleagues whom had been assisting her in the treatment of his Disorder - Treatments which he had not been responding to. However, in order to assist with his treatments, she requested that her mother-in-law, Patli (Pronounced Pali) to come with them, since she was the one person whom he shared the strongest bond with.

He was only 17 when the Borg attempted their second invasion of the Federation, the USS Byzantium was called upon to assist with stopping them. Unfortunately, the ship was destroyed, with only a dozen or so survivors - Mecatl, Patli and his mother being among them. While they might have survived the initial destruction of their ship, his mother was gravely wounded. While they weren't able to save her, they were able to save her symbiont: Qian, which as also injured. While they had attempted to save the Qian symbiont, the medics among the survivors were unable to stabilize it normally. That was when Mecatl volunteered to be joined with Qian. Though reluctant, the medics followed his wishes.

Mecatl's joining with the Qian symbiont wasn't easy. Since he was half-human, he physiology wasn't as easily capable of supporting the injured symbiont as his mother had. It was several days before their escape shuttle was recovered by rescue crews. By then however, the bond between Mecatl and the Qian Symbiont had already began to stabilize.

Following his joining to the Qian symbiont, Mecatl endured an entire shift in her personality. Where he used to be quiet and withdrawn, he was suddenly social and amicable. Where he had been something of a virtuoso, he could barely pick up the instruments that had brought him so much peace as a child. Though he could still play as well as before the joining, he no longer enjoyed the act. In fact, it appeared as though his joining to the Qian symbiont had been exactly what he needed to resolve his condition. The Symbiosis Commission on the other hand, were not as amused by his recovery. In fact, as soon as he returned to Trill for evaluation, the Symbiosis Commission had decided that, since Mecatl was half human, it would be safe to remove the Qian Symbiont to await transfer into another host.

He went through the removal operation normally, as did Qian, but then during recovery, Mecatl wasn't healing. As it turned out, his Trill physiology had adapted to accept the Symbiont, and, now that it had been removed, was reacting to its loss as any other Trill would. Realizing what they had done, the Symbiosis Commission returned the Qian Symbiont to Mecatl hours later.

Return Home

Once he had recovered from his ordeal, Mecatl returned to Earth with his Grandmother to stay with their clan. It was also during this time that his mother's family had chosen to see him for the first time in nearly a decade...Needless to say, the group did not get along. His maternal grandparents and his clan got along fine, it was Mecatl whom didn't enjoy their presence. While there, they [his Trill Family] tried to convince him to attend one of the Music Academies on the Trill homeworld. After three weeks of them trying to convince him to return to Trill, he informed all of them that he would be attending Starfleet Academy before the year was out. He hasn't spoken to his mother's family since.

Starfleet Career

Academy at War

While attending Starfleet Academy, he focused his studies primarily on engineering and starship operations. He spent the next few years at the academy, and was even offered a place in the elite "Red Squad" at some point after his sophomore year, but he was ultimately unable to obtain the spot as he was beat out by another cadet.

In early 2375, he was assign to Starbase 291 close to the Federation/Cardassian boarder for his field training during his Junior year at the Academy. While there, he spent much of his time assisting in the preparation and repair of vessels both heading into Cardassian Space and those which had been engaging with Klingon ships against Cardassian and other Dominion vessels.

Some months into his assignment, a surprise attack by the Dominion caught the station and the ships attached to it off-guard. In the ensuing battle, Qian boarded the USS Huliaarr in order to assist the engineering crew whom were short on staff. While the fleet may have won the battle in the end, they still lost the station after a group of Jem'Hadar battleship's made a wave of kamakazi runs the station.

Battlefield Commission

Following the destruction of Starbase 291, Qian was reassigned to the Huliaarr to complete his field training (and because starfleet was suffering from a shortage of capable available officers at the time), where he was awarded a field commission some months later in recognition of his services, and assigned as one of the ship's engineers. Eventually, do to a critical loss during the Second Battle of Chin'Toka, the ship's chief engineer, assistant chief engineer, and much the alpha-shift engineering staff were killed during the battle. As the ranking engineering officer to survive following the fleet's retreat, he was given a promotion and allowed to serve as Acting Chief Engineer until a suitable replacement could be found.

After serving in the position for several weeks, and with no replacement found, he was offered the place as full-time Chief Engineer along with a promotion. However, before he was able to assume the position, Mecatl was subpoenaed as a witness to a murder on the Osiris Colony, forcing him to remain behind as his ship went into the last battle of the war: The Battle of Cardassia, and was destroyed with all hands.

Post-War Career

Initially, the loss of his first two assignments while he was away had weighed heavily on him; with a prevalent history of loosing people, he developed a sordid-form of survivor's guilt. Even though he was a Joined Trill, his symbiont was still young fairly young, and none of the Qian Symbiont's previous hosts had ever experienced losses on such a scale. Realizing this, an old colleague of his mother's from Starfleet Medical stepped in order to get him the help he needed to get on with his life. Under normal circumstances, Starfleet would have granted him leave time in order to recuperate, but with all of the heavy losses that the fleet suffered, they simply could not afford to let him off so easily. So instead, they compromised: offering him a position at Starfleet R&D, of which, he readily accepted. Over the few months following his reassignment, he struggled to cope as the therapy was, while more than sufficient, was completely ineffective, and his work suffered as a consequence. Eventually however, he decided to preform the Rite of Emergence in order to speak with Qian's former hosts, in order to find some guidance. This as it turned out, was something that he should have done in the first place, since it was his mother whom had been the one to pry him from his void. With his recovery complete, he spent the next seven years there, first apart of the Luna class design team, then as apart of other various projects until 2382, when he offered another post as the Chief Engineer of the USS Oran.

Readily accepting the post, and relishing the chance to explore again, he set out with the Oran on her journey to explore the Federation Frontier. He then spent the next three years as the ship's Chief Engineer until in 2385, he was offered a position as First Officer of the USS Goggayya, where he served until the ship was decommissioned.

Personal Life

Personal Relationships

Family

Mecatl was the only child born between Erza Qian, and Nelli Yolotl, although he does possess a very large extended family, primarily composed of his paternal family, or clan.

He little about the whereabouts of his maternal family, as his mother was also an only child and never knew if she had any family besides them. Most of what he knows of his Trill grandparents comes from his mother (via the Qian Symbiont).

His paternal side on the other hand, is quite extensive. Growing up, he spent a lot of time with his father's family, the Yolotl Clan situated in the Yucatan region of Earth.
