General Overview

The ‘’’Arrowhead’’’-class is a Federation runabout developed in the late 24th century. Its design introduces similar themes and lessons learned from the Danube-class and Delta Flyer-class as well as larger starships. This versatile shuttle is designed to complement the garrisons of starbases and larger starships to perform missions and roles that may be too dangerous or inefficient for larger ships.

Class History

The development of the Danube-class runabout in the mid 24th century introduced a new strategy for starfleet. This light multipurpose vessel was designed as a craft capable of ranges and roles far in excess of a standard shuttlecraft, but at a lower profile than the traditional starship. This flexibility could allow the early runabouts to be utilized as a long-range personnel and cargo transport, an agile mobile defense platform, or a reconnaissance vehicle. They were used to great success during the beginnings of the Maquis crisis, and proved to be quite useful during the Dominion cold war and the Dominion War itself. But the technology was quickly becoming outdated.

As advanced starship designs and higher efficiency warp fields were developed, high warp speeds could be obtained with much lower costs. The aging ’’’Danube’’’-class was having difficulty keeping up with the developments, and eventually used less due to the availability of larger, faster courier ships. They were still widely used by larger starships since they were much more effective than a standard shuttlecraft, but USS Voyager designed Delta Flyer-class quickly became more popular. The ’’’Delta Flyer’’’-class runabouts had more advanced engines, weapon, and sensor capabilities, but fell behind the ’’’Danube’’’-class with its cargo and passenger capabilities.

Very shortly after the introduction of the ‘’’Delta Flyer’’’-class, Starfleet began development of the ‘’’Arrowhead’’’-class. Designed as a merging of the existing technologies, this new runabout was designed to combine the best features of the ‘’’Delta Flyer’’’ with the versatility of the ‘’’Danube’’’. The first prototypes entered service for testing in 2386, and entered full production in late 2389.

Technical Data

Larger than both the ‘’’Danube’’’ and ‘’’Delta Flyer’’’ classes, the ‘’’Arrowhead’’’-class runabout uses its extra size to incorporate both a larger engine powerplant, cargo space that was lacking in the ‘’’Delta Flyer’’’, and additional defense systems.

The ‘’’Arrowhead’’’-class is equipped with five Type V Phaser Arrays, five Type VI Phaser Arrays, two Micro Torpedo Launchers, one fore and one aft, and storage for up to ten Type II Hand Phasers. Munition stores for the torpedo launchers can hold up to twenty each of Micro Quantum Torpedoes and Micro Photon Torpedoes, with capability of either type to be launched from each launcher.

Transporter capabilities have also been enhanced from the ‘’’Arrowhead’s’’’ predecessors. The ‘’’Arrowhead’’’-class can transport up to four individuals at once, compared to the ‘’’Danube’’’-class’s two. Advances in warp field geometry and matter/anti-matter reactor efficiency, the warp drive of the ‘’’Arrowhead’’’-class is capable of higher and longer lasting warp speeds, giving the ‘’’Arrowhead’’’ a longer operating range.

Physical Arrangement

The ‘’’Arrowhead’’’-class is designed to be more aerodynamic than the ‘’’Danube’’’, similar to the ‘’’Delta Flyer’’’ and ‘’’AeroShuttle’’’ classes. Although this does provide additional benefits while flying in an atmosphere, this configuration also influences the warp field. In order to keep the cargo and passenger capabilities of the ‘’’Danube’’’ and still maintain the advances made in more recent craft, the ‘’’Arrowhead’’’ needed to be much longer, nearly twice the length of the ‘’’Delta Flyer’’’-class. This allows for all the amenities of the ‘’’Danube’’’-class, but does limit the number of platforms that can base the ‘’’Arrowhead’’’.
