Benzar, or Pheradon to the natives, is the only inhabited planet in the Delta Pavonis system which is locatedin the Beta Quadrant and is a Federation member world. The atmosphere has a number of rare gases in it that are inert to most species but which are essential to most Benzites' survival though a few can be "weaned" from them in order to serve in offworld services such as Starfleet.

Economy

Benzar's economy relies heavily on its scientific and engineering programs and universities. As 80% of its surface is covered in water and the only land a smattering of large islands also called ecospheres, Benzar has no land-based natural resources to speak of. It does, however, have a very good academic reputation, however not as many offworlders come to Benzar as to places like Vulcan due to the Benzite's reputation for being somewhat hard to get along with, despite their stellar intellects.

Benzar also is a very high producer of seafood as most of its animal life is indeed sealife. Like Bolarus IX, it also creates textiles or other products out of the remains of the sealife such as cloth or clothing. Benzite satin is very good cloth, though not as prized as Bolian silk.

Geographical Data

The planet Benzar is quite watery as 80% of its surface is covered in water and it has a smattering of large islands, indeed bordering on Class O. There are several geostructures, one on each island, and the natives on each of them look so similar that other species cannot tell them apart. These geostructures are similar to biosystems, in which each area has its own unique animal- and plantlife and some of the cities are underwater.

Belross Geostructure

Belross Province is one of the few geostructures that attract the scientific community as Belross, and a few others, have ruins from ancient Benzar. These ruins on Belross are indicative that perhaps aliens such as the Preservers or the Iconians might have visited in the distant past. However, it is still unknown and scientists continue to dig deeper into the crust of the planet.

Because of the locations of these ruins, the city of Bersot is one of the main centers of scientific learning on the world of Benzar, this one mainly concerned with archaeology, history, and other social sciences. The people from this geostructure are distinguishable by their reddish-violet pigmentation at certain points on their bodies.

Chadock Geostructure

The Chadock Geostructure is a mountainous and lush province, save that it has several active volcanoes, which cause the ground and the beaches to be black from the volcanic rock. The lowlying areas are used for farming due to the high concentration of nutrients in the ground and others are used for fertilizers for other geostructures with flatter landmasses.

The biosphere known as Galmut Chi Panzor is the city where the largest fertilizer factory is located and is found at the bottom of a large lake in the geostructure and the people from Chadock are identifiable by their points of bluish-violet.

Utva Geostructure

The geostructure known as Utva is a semi-arid grassland province with dry grasses and thin, bent trees which are adapted to the aridity though a few rivers flow through the province. Its main economic draw is the medical university that many young Benzites attend that aspire to become doctors. The people from this province have orangish pigmentation at certain points on their bodies.

Points of Interest

Map of Benzar

Bersot Science Academy

The Science Academy at Bersot is one of the best in the Federation though not one of the most popular due to the Benzites' attitude concerning work. The professors assist one another in their classes and indeed teach each other's students and give them assignments. This structure in a university is, needless to say, extremely confusing to other races and as such offworlders prefer to attend more structured institutions such as the Trill Institute of Science or the Vulcan Science Academy.

Ancient Ruins

There are several places on the planet where old ruins are located from some 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. Unfortunately, the knowledge of who these ancients were was lost, but archaeologists and anthropologists are attempting to unravel the mysteries of these ruins. The ruins located at Belross, as stated before, are indicative that an advanced civilization may have contacted the Benzite race. However, the other ruins lead scientists to believe that, at one time, the Benzites might have had technology before they were destroyed by a natural disaster.

Emblem of Benzar
Much is unknown about Benzar's distant past, but what is known is that the ancient Benzites might have been contacted by unknown extraterrestials such as Preservers or Iconians. Scientists are still attempting to piece together the ancient past of Benzar, including the peoples who were not contacted and left to themselves.

What is known is that the people of Benzar began to once again achieve industrialization around 1200 AD. During this time, the Benzites began sailing across their world to other geostructures and meeting one another. It was impractical to make war or try to conquer each other because of the vast distances and the lack of land in each biosphere. However, eventually the Benzites began to grow closer together out of necessity as some geostructures exported food and others exported textiles or ores and in this way, through cooperation, they became one world.

Benzar achieved warp drive in the early 1900s, however remained independent and removed from the races of the Federation for quite some time. It was not until Captain Robert April made contact in 2249 that the Benzite people were even aware of the Federation. However, Benzar did not wish to become a member and chose to remain independent though through a series of treaties they became quite cordial with the Federation. The Treaty of Vulcan in particular brought Benzar and the Federation into a very close friendship where they would come to each other's aid.

During the early 24th century Benzar became part of the Federation and with that their military was absorbed into Starfleet, though not many starships had Benzite officers aboard as the Benzar Defense Militia was quite smaller than Starfleet. In the 2360s more Benzites began to join Starfleet in an effort to learn more about the galaxy and science in general. Because of the high quality of Benzar schools, the curriculum was not too difficult for the Benzite cadets and soon Benzite officers and crewmen became more common on Starfleet ships and facilities.

In 2374, Betazed fell to the Dominion in the Dominion War, leaving several planets open to attack, such as Bolarus IX, Benzar, and Vulcan. Two of these planets were indeed attacked and, though they were protected by the 10th Fleet, it was insufficient to protect both planets and the worlds were occupied before being liberated by a combination of Federation, Klingon, and Romulan forces. This occupation typically left a scar upon the Benzite psyche.

After the resolution of the Dominion War, Benzar was one of the main opponents to sending aid to the Cardassians.
