Canon is a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works.

Tiers of canon

The terms of Canon are tossed around often enough, but very rarely is the time taken to sit and explain what each tier means, not just for you but for your material. Be it a new race you invented or a cool piece of technology, everything fits into Tiers.

Listed below are the entirety of the Tiers recognized by Pegasus Fleet:

Sim canon

Sim canon is the default level of canon. Anything that is not specifically in another designation is here. Sim canon can be used on the sim it is approved for, and that sim alone. It requires approval by the commanding officer (CO) of that sim to use unless the material is also marked as restricted canon. Any decisions made as to the capacity, or if changes need to be made, will come directly from the CO. Deviations from the sim canon requested from the CO may need to be approved by the department of resources as well.

  • Only the commanding officer’s approval is required to play something in sim canon unless the material is marked as restricted canon.
  • If the requested material is listed as restricted canon, it must be treated as such for the purposes of verification.

Expanded canon

Expanded canon is the next step above sim canon, and requires approval from the resources department. Once submitted and approved by the resources department, any player interested in using the material covered under expanded canon can do so freely using the approved submission as a reference document. This still would require the approval of the sim's commanding officer (CO), but it no longer requires the approval of the original submitter. In essence, they have shared it with the entire community.

  • After submission and approval by the resources department, only the commanding officer’s approval is required to play something in expanded canon. If the material in question is also considered restricted canon, then those guidelines must be followed as well.
  • Any other player in Pegasus Fleet can request to use this material, pending the approval of their commanding officer

Restricted canon

Restricted canon is a modifier to a submission to the resources department that has been deemed to be slightly troublesome, worrisome, or just too difficult without actually being detrimental enough to be marked as disallowed canon. Usually, material is classified as restricted canon when the material is too ‘powerful’ or out of perceived balance, and the submitter does not wish to refine their submission any further.

Restricted canon can only be used on a sim if the request is approved by both the sim's commanding officer (CO) and the majority of the joint body of the resources department and the Pegasus Fleet admiralty. A commanding officer who is already a member of either of these bodies must seek out another member to act in this capacity, and a majority is required to allow the usage. Once allowed, the material is authorized for use on that sim only.

  • Material listed as restricted canon requires the approval of both the commanding officer and a majority of the the resources department and the Pegasus Fleet admiralty.
  • In the event that the commanding officer is also a member of the joint approval body, they cannot act in this capacity for the purposes of approval.
  • Restricted canon status merely modifies what is involved in gaining the approval to use the material. As such, restricted canon status can be applied to any other tier of canon.

Disallowed canon

A submission deemed disallowed canon is not allowed to be used by players, even the submitter, in any circumstance.

  • Disallowed canon material cannot be used by players. It exists purely for potential antagonists, guest spot NPC figures or items, and items of interest. It is not allowed to be used on the sim long term.

Fleet canon

Fleet canon (occasionally referred to as "community canon") is a special designation only used internally within Pegasus Fleet staff and the resources department. This tier denotes material that is directly related and in use to the Pegasus Fleet-wide story arc. As such, it can draw upon any tier of material to be used, provided that once the story arc is concluded, the original canon tier of all material is respected.

  • Material listed as fleet canon is only to be used for the fleet-wide story arc. For player use, the material's original canon tier rating should be consulted.
  • Commanding officers who want to know what is and isn’t fleet vanon for any given story arc should check with their task force command staff or the department of resources

Trek canon

Trek Canon is any material that was shown directly in the various television series or movies only.

  • Trek canon does not include any material that only exists in books, video games, fan fictions, or any other non-television non-movie media.
  • Any such source is not considered Trek canon and to be used must be requested through the sim's commanding officer and the tesources fepartment.

Process for canonization

The proper method to submit requests is through the commanding officer, who will forward these requests to the resources department along with the resource department’s ruling. Any approval from resources is not to be considered an approval from the commanding officer.
