The Deltans are a humanoid species from the planet Delta IV in the Delta Triciatu star system, or known to the natives as the planet Dhei in the Lta star system. They may be seen as proud and somewhat aloof at first, but once one gets to know them one can detect a highly developed sense of humor and fun lying beneath it. Deltans are a highly sexual race and sexual innuendo permeates every facet of life on Delta IV. Because of this heightened sexuality and the resulting insanity in other species from intercourse with Deltans, all Deltans who serve in Starfleet are required to take the Oath of Celibacy upon entering Starfleet Academy.

History

If the Deltan people may be said to be a hypersexual race, it is because their entire species was threatened by inbreeding long ago. Many microcultures existed on Delta IV in the distant past and the extensive planetary chains of islands though they never quite developed xenophobia of one another. To prevent inbreeding, the Deltans developed an extremely open culture, lending itself to the developing of their pheromones. Stranded sailors were often adopted into large group orgies to refresh local gene pools and helped the other Deltans learn about their home cultures. United by ties of sex and geography, they learned to coexist by necessity; with a bountiful natural resources and a low species birthrate, wars over resources were almost unknown on Delta IV.

Deltans became curious about their moon and wished to see what it was like, so they began to build starships around 1982 and first landed on their moon, Seyann. They learned that their moon, like their planet, had local animal- and plantlife not unlike that on Delta IV. They began to explore the lunar surface, cataloguing the plants and animals located there, quickly learning that each valley in its mountains had its own ecosystem. They traveled to the planet's other moon, Cinera, within ten years and discovered that it was little more than a ball of rock similar to Luna, Earth's moon.

First Contact

In 2141, the USS Horizon discovered the Deltan people. The Deltans said they were from the planet Dhei in the system Lta, but the science officer of the Horizon charted it as Delta which eventually became Delta Triciatu. In this contact, the human crew became quickly aware of the Deltans' pheromones, causing the men in particular to react strongly to this. The crew of the Horizon dealt with the problem by engaging in strenuous exercise more often than usual, causing them to be too tired to feel the pheromones to the extent as when they were rested.

Contact with the Andorians came about ten years later in 2153, a contact that was described as 'odd' since the Andorians felt both attracted and repelled by the Deltans since they felt an overwhelming attraction and resented being forced to feel so.

Contact with Humans continued through to the 23rd century, however it was the USS Constellation that discovered the true extent of the effects Deltans could have on other races. A human male by the name of Robert Tyler engaged in sexual acts with a female Deltan crewmember, causing him to go insane. It was the consequences of this union that caused the Oath of Celibacy that modern Deltans must make before entering Starfleet.

Warp Flight & Federation Membership

Wanting to visit the homeworlds of their friends, the Deltan people began experimenting with warp engines, eventually achieving it in 2223. They then set course for Earth, succeeding in reaching their destination and causing the fledgling Federation to invite them to become a member. There was some adjusting at first, as outsiders clearly could not be allowed on Delta IV, so the Deltans created a city on the moon Seyann and turned the orbital spacestation into a visitor center. Due to more incidents of near-insanity by crewmen on R&R, visitors were soon required to receive an inhibitor shot to allow them to deal with the pheromones surrounding them more easily.

Deltans were soon entering Starfleet and their natural empathy and related pain-relieving abilities enabled them to make outstanding medical officers and counselors and the only species more highly sought after than a Deltan for a counselor was Betazoid.

Deltans served in the Cardassian War and the Cardassians discovered, to their detriment, that it was not wise to rape a Deltan prisoner of war, as it caused many weaker-minded Cardassian officers to lose their sanity.

During the Dominion War, Delta IV was one of the planets targeted by the Cardassians and the Dominion and were liberated a year later by the Seventh Fleet. In 2375, after the Dominion War had ended, Deltan members of the Federation Council supported the admittance of Bajor into the Federation, however they objected to aid given to the Cardassians.

Physiology

Along with varying skin tones, Deltans have two genders, male and female, both capable of producing pheromones that affect each other and other races in quantity. They have no body hair save for eyebrows and eyelashes and Deltan females carry their children for 11 months. Deltan faces are more symmetrical than human faces and they have a tall, straight posture that seems effortless, causing other races to find them more attractive.

Empathy

Deltans are naturally empathic and as a result of both this and their pheromones it is seen as outrageous behavior to attempt to lie or not be entirely honest with them. Their empathy allows them to relieve pain in others through tactile contact, though it does not heal injuries but rather gives the illusion that the pain is receding. This effect is not as foolproof as chemical pain relievers as the pain returns when the Deltan in question is far enough away. They also have limited telepathy where they can communicate with other telepathic species.

Diseases

Deltans have the usual childhood diseases and a number of cold- and flulike ailments, though one neurological disorder known as Deltan seizures whereupon it causes the Deltan extreme pain along with anyone in contact with his/her skin.

Culture and Society

Every aspect of Deltan culture has some form of sexual reference in it from lovers to strangers meeting for the first time. Sexual innuendo and foreplay permeate every conversation on Delta IV. Whether this is a result of the Deltan's pheromones or their history is unknown but what is known is the fact Deltans will have large orgies to reestablish dwindling populations. Intercourse between two Deltans is not simply a physical connection, but also an emotional and psychological one because of their empathy. Deltans engaged in sexual intercourse are able to project images and emotions into their lovers' minds, which is what causes the insanity in most other species. Betazoids and other telepathic races are able to keep their sanity in the long term, but will have a very tenuous hold on their mental facilities in the short term.

Deltans take honesty very seriously. If one were to attempt to lie to a Deltan or to withold part of the truth, the Deltan and his/her family would be highly offended and no person in the immediate area would consider talking to such a person.

However, Deltans also have a very playful side and though they can seem aloof to other species. If one looks under the coolness, one may find a very highly developed sense of humor which may be enjoyed thoroughly by both parties. Some of the younger Deltans also enjoy playing pranks on others, and though their elders may enjoy watching it, they try to teach their children to be calm and collected in the presence of aliens.

Delta IV has had an extremely cosmopolitan society for centuries and has been at the forefront of the fashion and home decorating industries along with Risa for many years. A Deltan that wears too much makeup is almost always an actor in a play wherein the lights are too bright for anything else. Many Deltans are also obsessed with shopping and clothes, no matter if the Deltan in question is male or female.

Political System

Deltans have councils of elders that make decisions for their cities, islands, and planet. These elders are elected from among the people and make laws as needed though if no new laws are necessary or if there are no crimes committed, they will not meet until they have something to do.

Religion

Deltans believe in seven gods who share the powers of the universe among them such as sunlight/moonlight, earthquakes/storms, wisdom, etc. The Deltans believe that marriage is not necessarily binding and can be married anywhere from 1 to 10 people in their lifetime; as such, marriage rituals are practically nonexistent. The rituals surrounding their gods, however, vary from island to island.

Contact

First contact was with Humans in 2141 and while it could have indeed have gone smoother, it was by no means a failure though a few successive contacts were disastrous.

Technology

Deltans are Federation members and thus have access to warp drive, medical technology, and transporters among others. Deltan scientists are attempting to discover more procedures that will allow technology to imitate their empathy's pain relieving qualities.
