A department head is the head of a department on a starship, starbase or installation. The department head is responsible that all tasks and responsibilities assigned to their department are carried out. The department head reports directly to the Executive Officer.

Typical departments on a starship include the Command Department, Flight Control Department, Strategic Operations Department, Security/ Tactical Department(s), Operations Department, Engineering Department, Science Department, Medical Department, Intelligence Department, Diplomatic Department, Marine Detachment, Starfighter Wing, and Civilian Affairs.
