Assignment
Rear Admiral Markus D. Reinhart is a Federation Starfleet officer serving the Eleventh Fleet. He serves as 11th Fleet's Chief of Fleet Operations and Task Force 11 Commander. Reinhart is also the Commanding Officer of the USS Shiloh, a a Lexington-class carrier, the flagship of Eleventh Fleet and Battle Group Shiloh. He also served as the commanding officer of the USS Anubis, a Wildcat-class class frigate. Rear Admiral Reinhart served throughout the Dominion War as a Star Fleet Marine Corps pilot, and an Air Wing Commander.

Personality & Traits

General Overview

During Reinhart’s early years, he grew up mild-mannered and pleasant. In his teens, he developed a passive-aggressive temperament and it now affects his judgment and politics. He can be intimidating, and sometimes overbearing to work with. One of the reasons why he never had aspirations to run for public office was because his father told him that "if [he] were down in the polls, [he] would deflate the tires on [his] opponent's campaign bus." His passive aggressive attitude and actions became more aggressive and alpha-male when he commissioned in the Marines following college, and only hardened to the months of Officer-Candidate School (OCS).

Strengths & Weaknesses

He is cunning, usually sarcastic and witty, but can really be quite the leader. His college days really helped him with deciding who he was and what kind of a person he would be. However, Mark thrives and lives off some relaxation and can often be found just sitting in a beach chair in a holo-deck. Though hard to find, he often likes to find a place where there is little to no noise pollution. His character flaws come from his pride and underestimating opponents. Although normally level-headed, usually meaningless actions by friends and acquaintances can lead to day, sometimes week long grudges. He respects his chain of command, however, even though he had a hard time during his college career respecting the upperclassmen and low-level officers.

Ambitions

Reinhart never dreamed of being a starship commander. His only ambitions were to remain with his Marine units and eventually command a flight school for fighters and bombers back on Earth. To some degree, he regretted being put on a vessel where there are no fighters. To another, he believes that there are benefits from getting away from his career path. Since his ambitions were aviation and aerospace related, his goals were to command a carrier. Having attained Flag-rank and command of the Lexington-class carrier, USS Shiloh, Reinhart's only ambitions are to serve out his tour of duty and return to Pensacola, FL, Earth.

Hobbies & Interests

His hobbies are his escapes. His dog, Buster, a German Sheppard, can usually be found around his quarters with him, if he is not being walked by Mark. Reinhart enjoys the things that embodied his childhood. Flying, driving cars, golfing, skiing and hiking are often his center focuses on getting away from his daily life. Because he enjoys these things, his usual holodeck programs model after them.

However, sometimes he can be found on the beach or in a hot springs somewhere in a mountain range relaxing. To Mark, the simple things in life are always the most relaxing.

History

Early Life

Mark grew up in a supportive home with two successful parents. His father, Markus, owned a fixed-base operator (FBO)/Star Port outside of Stuttgart, Germany. His mother, Madeline, was a chef and owner of a Mediterranean cuisine restaurant just outside of town. Mark’s sister, Jennifer, worked as a banker in Munich, Germany. He was close to his sister after he left college and often confided in her growing up. His past was troubled however by family disputes and a lack of support from his mother for his aspirations and dreams.

Reinhart’s father was a pilot. Not just a star pilot, but a real heavier than air pilot. Mark often worked there during his summers and time off from school, which was where he learned to be both a star pilot and an atmospheric pilot. It is rare to find a person who has logged time in a P-51 Mustang from Earth's World War Two, and Reinhart is one of those persons. His father, a historian buff and aviation fanatic, participated in air-races with historical aircraft. One of the aircraft he owned was a North American P-51 Mustang, and Mark had the distinct privilege and pleasure of both learning how and frequently flying the most renown aircraft ever built. It was in his younger years and his teens and out of his time flying such a famous and loved plane that his love for flying mixed with his aspirations for exploration and military action. This became one of his dreams. His mother's restaurant was good, but usually fed off the profits of her husband's FBO. There, Reinhart learned how to cook, serve, and some mild gardening habits for plants and spices his mom had home-grown. These small values helped the domestic nature of his life and allowed him to focus on the simpler aspects of life when his life became too stressful. Although his mother had taught him and nurtured him, she did not support his ambitions to be an aviator or even enter Starfleet for that matter. Her brother had died early in his career confronting Cardassians in the 2360’s. She became anti-war and developed anti-military stances as she became more politically inclined. Early on in his life, Madeline Reinhart tried to instill these malicious feelings in her son and found great resistance. Since then, she had tried to prevent him from spending time with the pilots and working for Reinhart’s father at the Star Port. When Reinhart finally became a pilot, his mother tried her hardest to restrict his actions and goals. It was hard to tell if this was out of fear for his life or fear that her son was going to be something she did not want him to be.

His education was both of the home and school. He attended public school up until high school. Afterwards, Reinhart attended a private, Lutheran high school. He earned a GPA good enough to get him a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship, but not into the Academy.

Academy and Fleet Career

He attended a college that was well known in the military called "The Citadel". It is a military college in South Carolina. He reported to T Company, called Tango Company in the phonetic alphabet that the school has used since its beginnings. He learned tradition, followership and leadership, and graduated in the top 10% of his class with a degree in electrical engineering.

While at the Citadel, a place that was built on a four-class system since its foundation in 1842, Mark faced different lifestyles, dreams, and grew out of his sheltered lifestyle where he had everything provided for him. His stipend pay from ROTC was enough to feed him on the weekends and during hours of “General Leave” or liberty. His success both academically and military was awarded with great leadership opportunities including Company Clerk (a prestige and difficult job) immediately after returning for his first semester as an upperclassmen, then Squad Corporal, in charge of a squad of his own freshmen to train and lead. His chain of command and military advisors were impressed with his ability and at the beginning of his junior year was promoted to Tango Company First Sergeant. This top junior position within the company was both difficult for him and a straight out blast. He learned the difficulties of not only being an example for the freshman class, but a leader of his peers and upperclassmen. After learning the walk through trial by error, he put on his Senior Year dream sheet Tango Company Commander. He earned the position, the one of the three most esteemed senior year positions (right behind Regimental Commander and Battalion Commander). Leading the company in Parade, Inspection, Formation, and Physical Fitness training, Reinhart learned the hardships of a command and decision making. The failures of his subordinates became his failures, and he had to relearn and understand the importance of instilling and mandating discipline in ranks and a military bearing. Leading a hundred men and women, all from different backgrounds and lifestyles, come together to get an education and graduate from a state military college, Reinhart finished his senior year with various awards for his military conduct, academic performance and Company achievements. He graduated and wears the ring that represents four years of hell that’s gate that locks you in, not people out.

Upon commissioning, he was one of only a handful of ROTC graduates to be granted permission to further their education in a graduate program at a college they apply to. Reinhart then graduated with an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) from Harvard. His options were presented to him to enter Marine OCS (mandated for all non-academy cadets wishing to be officers) and have a guaranteed flight slot, or enter Starfleet as a basic officer and have a slim chance. His instincts took him to the guaranteed pilot school. He graduated from OCS, exhausted and determined to do whatever he had aspired to.

The Basic School, required for all Marines, had taught him how to be an infantry-man. His mother hated it, and Reinhart was starting to like it. But pressures from his father had pushed him to return to his original dreams to get his position as a Naval Aviator with Starfleet. But his skills learned from basic were applied to all of his outdoor activities. From skiing and mountain warfare for his hiking and love for winter sports, to rifle and grenadier experts which he applied to his hunting and athletic ability. Following the end of TBS, he was in the best shape of his life. Mark Reinhart was then sent to Primary Flight School. Because of his hundreds of hours as Pilot-In-Command in various star craft and airplanes, Reinhart easily graduated at the top 2% of his basic class, and starship helm class. He was trained on both Fighters as well as large battle cruisers and signed off by his flight instructor for both a pilot slot in any craft or a helm position on ships ranging from the Sabre class straight through the Sovereign Class. Although he was a Marine Aviator, wearing the green collar and traditional military rank, his training was rounded for all sorts of piloting skills (tactics in combat, atmosphere, space, navigation and engineering), but he still withheld the ideal that every Marine is a rifleman.

His instructors and superior officers commented that he "was one of the best pilots they've seen", which only reflected on his father's education and his willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. But his career was just starting. Graduating with his selection of duty from Flight School, Reinhart chose to the Broadsword with a Marine Squadron off of an Akira Class Cruiser right at the end of the 2360’s. During peacetime, he flew two combat missions on pirates operating just inside of Federation space. His success in these missions gave him experience in fighter-combat and operational tactics involving fleet actions. After two years as Squadron Operations Officer, he was made on Wing Weapons Officer with responsibilities of ensuring enough munitions and equipment for missions. He had a short career on Wing Staff and finished with Captain rank. It was 1973 when Starfleet received it’s first two operational squadron of Valkyrie fighters. Reinhart was given the command of the second squadron.

Dominion War

Reinhart’s assignment was Commanding Officer for the VMA-101 (Fixed-Wing Marine Attack Squadron) Squadron, they were called the “Vikings”. The squadron was attached to Carrier Air Wing Seven (CVW-7), the “Sky Chiefs”. Because he was assigned to one of the first operational Valkyrie squadrons, he was late into action for the outbreak of the Dominion War. The first few battles were missed because of time spent training on the new weapons platform. Starfleet was skeptical of its combat abilities and needed to train its pilots of its abilities before wasting some of their best pilots to unnecessary losses on the front lines. Eager to be put into battle, Reinhart pressed for the squadron and wing to be rotated to the USS Torishima, an Akira, to relieve an Air-Wing that has been operating at half-strength since the beginning of the war. With enough pressure on Starfleet Brass, help from the Wing Commander, and realization the older fighters were not effective in these battles, CVW-7 was assigned to front line operations.

It is important to note that during this time, Tyler Reinhart died during fighting early on in the Dominion War. Though the effects of this tragedy did not necessarily take a toll on Reinhart’s behavior, he does often reflect back on

Combat operations through the Dominion war saw heavy losses for fighters (and the Federation). Starfleet had lost many ships, and loss of life was staggering. The war was turning in favor of the Dominion and large, decisive battles were needed for both the morale support of the Federation and its allies, and for the balance of power to change. Changing tactics were necessary, and it was quite evident that it was difficult for the Federation to win large-scale battles. Fighters were employed in striking supply lines, outposts, and harassing enemy units more often. Even though their successes were limited, Reinhart’s squadron of Marine aviators was put to the test on numerous occasions during the First Battle of Chin’toka.

In the actual space battle, the VMA-101 was tasked with supporting operations and protecting flanks of the vessels against any Jem’Hadar attack ships. Failure in Fleet Intelligence left the first wave of Federation Starships essentially unable to defend themselves in the fields of fire of the orbital defense systems. The Klingon and Federation vessels were falling victim to the powerful weapons and were losing numbers quickly. VMA-101 and the rest of CVW-7 were space-borne at the beginning of the operation. Reinhart’s unit was taking flank of the Federation wing operating in conjunction with a Peregrine squadron. They were systematically attacking and destroying the orbital platforms using their limited energy weapons and torpedoes. Once the weapons systems came online, the larger vessels of the attack wing were left susceptible to enemy fire.

Reinhart’s squadron was taking little to no actual attention to the defense platforms. He switched his role from supporting to primary defense. His squadron took a protective shell position around the USS Torishima attempting to assist in the destruction of the platforms while on the way to meet their objective. The Viking’s took small losses, the concentration of fire was used to eliminate the large (more dangerous) targets before such small and insignificant pawns in battle were considered a threat. Because of his efforts, the Torishima was escorted through the fire and given a mobile weapons/shield provided by the fighters. The augmented security helped the Akira last through the battle. Although the vessel took heavy fire and structural damage, the cruiser survived until the end of the destruction of the minefield. The damage was too great for warp travel and combat operations and was towed back to Starfleet for repair. CVW-7 took heavy losses once the platforms became operational and Jem’Hadar began ramming Klingon ships. The Wing Commander and Executive Officer were both loss in the engagement (the XO while aboard the Torishima, the Commander to a torpedo from one of the platforms. Reinhart’s coordination of units and actions during the First Battle of Chin’toka had earned him an Air Medal, and given the command of CVW-7 in the absence of the rest of the chain of command. Although his wing had taken heavy losses and was only operating at 60%, they were rotated out of combat and set on reserve duty until the Battle of Cardassia.

CVW-7, after months of repair, restructuring and training new pilots under Reinhart’s direct Command, was operating out of the USS Akita, another Akira, in the battle to end the war. Operating in conjunction with Romulan and Klingon units, the united allied fleet, possibly the largest formed in the war, left Deep Space 9 for Cardassia. The Akita was assigned to a Cruiser Squadron and Reinhart’s wing was operating in support of the larger vessels. It had become battle-tested that fighters, operating with larger warships, could become a powerful tactic. CVW-7’s 36 fighters were deployed in the first phase of the operation. Though the preliminary actions soon degenerated to unorganized and close-range ship-to-ship combat, Reinhart was able to minimize losses by grouping the squadrons in close formation with overlapping fields of fire operating in close conjunction with Cruisers and Federation warships under distress. Reinhart had been able to claim three kills in combat, two Dominion Scout Ships and a Jem’Hadar Attack ship (with a lucky shot, though Mark would never admit that it was a one and a million event), before the Dominion switched sides. The Akita recalled its remaining fighters and then continued to participate in battle in the last phase of the operation. Finally in orbit of Cardassia, the fighters were deployed in a protective shell of the Akita in the same fashion they operated in the First Battle of Chin’toka. They did not see battle even though because of the surrender of Dominion Forces.

Post-Dominion War

After the Dominion War, Reinhart was rotated out of command of CVW-7 and given a staff position in the 3rd Marine Armored Regiment; he was the Brigade Operations Officer for the 11th Aviation Brigade, all of the Division’s air units. His specific responsibility was coordinating any Aviation or space-related operation with the ground forces for the Regiment. This included Close-Air Support, transportation, supply runs and anything related to air-to-air combat. His time on a General’s staff, while stationed back on Earth, had given him the necessary high-level staff position that he needed to advance his career. His time on Brigade Staff, and latter advancing to Regimental Operations Officer proved that Reinhart was a coordinator. It had been his entire career, all of his commendations and successes have come out of communicating and coordinating actions. Squadron operations, even simple fire-team and assault actions at The Basic School, or as the Marines like to call it “The Big Suck”, and Wing operations during the Dominion War had been proven by Mark’s ability to transfer an idea to his subordinates, get them to implement that idea and carry it out successfully. After three years back on Earth training and operating with Marine Ground Forces, he transferred to Flight School.

Reinhart took the position as Executive Officer of the Primary Flight Training out of Pensacola, Florida. His time was spent organizing the flight school and ensuring the proper information gets to the Commander in a timely matter. He also divulged in being able to sit in the cockpit every now and then and challenge a hot-shot rookie.

In his career, Reinhart had never made Ace. His squadron and latter his wing, were commended for their roles in the Dominion War. He received various merits and citations for his own actions and operations conducted during his tours of duty with the 3rd Armored and PFT – Pensacola.

Mark Reinhart was now looking to take the final step in his long career with Starfleet. As an Marine aviator, he has moved in rank quickly. His steps were both because of his skill as a pilot and his performance as a coordinator. Although he could swear that the more fun years of his career were as a Second Lieutenant at TBS and Basic Flight, he looked to take command of a starship. He had served on them, understood how they worked. While he was the Commander of the Air Wing (CAG) for both Akita, he had daily briefings with the Captain and the Executive Officer. He believed, personally, that he was up to the task and willing to take on the role.

USS Anubis

Reinhart was promoted to Commander and given command of the USS Anubis, a prototype destroyer built off the Prometheus test-bed. His first mission involved rescuing a terra forming colony from the system’s star exploding. Due to the proximity of the vessel and the colony to Breen space, they were intercepted and attacked by the Breen Confederacy. At the start of the second mission, Reinhart was promoted to Captain and Senior Ship Commanding Officer. The Anubis was then on an intelligence gathering cloaked cruise around the Breen home world. A saboteur on board was draining power supply and trying to un-cloak the Anubis while still in hostile territory. Reinhart’s last mission as Commander of the Anubis was as escort to highly valuable political prisoners of the United Federation of Planets. The prison ship that the Anubis was escorting was destroyed in battle, and Mark was stripped of the rank of Captain. He was sent back to Earth to continue training fighters.

USS Shiloh

After a year as a Chief Flight Instructor and Academy Head, Commander Mark Reinhart applied for Command of Star Fleet’s newest carrier, the USS Shiloh. When he received command of the Shiloh, he was immediately transferred to the vessel to oversee its completion and testing.

During Testing Operations, the Shiloh was deployed to the Romulan Neutral Zone to deter a Federation cruiser from attacking a Romulan delegation.

Following testing, the Shiloh proceeded to Deep Space 5 to take on its first supply order, as well as receive new orders. Reinhart and the Shiloh were ordered to assist in a Colonization mission outside of Federation Space in the Heathercrist-System. During Operation Heathercrist, the Shiloh and the colony-ship Bridger assisted in the building and stabilization of the Heathercrist 5 Colony. Four days into the mission, however, Breen heavy cruisers uncloaked and disrupted the colonization process. The Shiloh evacuated the colony, all the while taking substantial causalties to ship crew, air wing pilots, Marines as well as colonists.

Pegasus Fleet

Reinhart, following substantial repairs to the Shiloh, was ordered to 11th Fleet to be the Chief of Fleet Operations and Task Force 11 Commander. Using Starbase 332 as his "home port", Reinhart commands Battle Group Shiloh in operations throughout Galactic South.
