Velara's original intentions were for colonization but soon grew into one of the leading research facilities for oceanic and atmospheric studies. With masses such as the Pleiades's Cluster and the Taurus Dark Cloud nearby, science doesn't end in space.
The colonists on Velara initially depend on a monthly supply transports for food and unavailable resources that the planet did not offer, at least until new crops take hold in the rich soils of the planet. While wildlife is not overly abundant, the majority of the planet's surface is covered in ocean water that is brimming with sea life as one food source.
As this new colony and it's residents continue to grow and develop further, the quaint shores of Velara grows more and more popular with Starfleet crews as they participate in shore leave. The colony itself has nine standalone holosuites for residents and visitors to use for personal entertainment when not reserved by personnel for training exercises. The coastal shores offer activities such as sailing, swimming, and other water activities. More inland, just past the fields of growing farmland, is the Lanai Forest which is home to local fauna and wildlife, great for hiking and an overnight camping trip.
