The Romulan Star Empire was taken from a thriving, powerful force to a few dozen thousand survivors scattered throughout the galaxy. While the Romulan government remains in some form, it's weakened, and many Romulans are just happy for a place to live and a chance to thrive after the destruction of their home world. All that is left of Romulus is an asteroid field where the planet once was. Starfleet has indicated that their may be future efforts to perform archaeological digs on the larger rocks in that field to see if any Romulan culture of relics can be found to help preserve the Romulans history.

Post Shinzon Incident

After the events of the Shizon uprising, the Romulan Star Empire found itself grappling with a civil war. Warring factions vied for control of the Empire, some demanding a Republic, some demanding a return the the old ways, and others, pushing for a reign of the Tal-Shiar. The old guard that wanted to push for Romulus to return to its Imperialistic tendancies, while many of the outer colonies pushed for a "people's government" to little avail. The Romulan fleet was largely divided and the infighting cost the fleet almost 50% of their size. The Civil war raged for quiet some time, but due to some careful negotiation from Federation Allies, the Romulan's slowly started feeling differently as the time went on. Eventually, in with losses in life and firepower reaching staggering levels, things started to settle, but it wouldn't be long before tragedy struck again.

Hobus Disaster

- Romulans initially hesitant to believe earnings, but then attempt to launch evacuation (believing they’ll have enough time) - Hobus goes Nova more quickly and aggressively than expected, catching everyone by surprise - bulk of evacuation fleet caught in the shockwave before they can escape - entire Romulan home system (including Romulus and Remus) are destroyed - Ambassador Spock is lost stopping the shockwave from causing further damage

Post-Hobus Disaster

- Reformation forces gain upper hand due to losses incurred as a result of Hobus - move to make their headquarters on Rator III capital of the new Romulan state, seek recognition and aide from Federation - refugees from Hobus begin to arrive on Rator; some resist attempts at new government, but most acquiesce - scattered remnants of “old guard” (esp. Tal-Shiar) continue to resist into present day (c. 2393), but make little progress doing so

Results

- Total Romulans remaining = ~ 160,000 across all ships, bases, colonies, and outposts (not counting other species) - Total military vessels remaining = ~ 2,500 ships of varying size and class (about 25% overall post-war strength) - asteroid field is all that remains of Romulus and Remus, might be excavated by Federation at some point - Hobus System is entirely shrouded in a nebula with a singularity at its core
