In order to ensure that your NOVA site appears on search engine rankings, you'll need to do a wee bit of extra work in order to ensure it shows up. Below you'll find the simple steps you can take to make your site more search engine friendly.

Step 1 - Prepare Your Site

Changing your SEO listing is something almost no-one who uses Nova is aware of, and the Anodyne team certainly made it tough to find the right place to do it.

Open your FTP client and delve in. You're looking for a file called nova.php which can be found in application/config. Load it into a text editor and you'll be able to find a couple of lines (starting around line 44) that begin with these prefixes:

$config['meta_desc'] = "Anodyne RPG..."; $config['meta_author'] = "Anodyne Productions"; $config['meta_keywords'] = "anodyne, productions, rpg";

When you look at these on your site, they'll be filled with Anodyne garbage which is totally useless and will make it tough for the search engine to accurately guide people to your site, that needs fixed!

Step 2 - Edit Nova.php

The first of these lines is used to fill in the description that the search engines (and places like facebook) will put when they show your link. No one cares about premiere junk, they want a description of your site. Here is the example for Starbase 332:

$config['meta_desc'] = "Starbase 332, an original character rpg set in the Star Trek Universe";

Author shouldn't be Anodunce, it's who runs the sim.

$config['meta_author'] = "Liarra Von";

Keywords are things related to your sim that people might search for your sim with. The further along the list the less relevant the keyword is. More keywords isn't better because the longer the list, the more diluted all those keywords will be. Limit yourself to 9 at most.

$config['meta_keywords'] = " Trek, Star, Star Trek, rpg, pegasus, fleet, pegasusfleet, Science Fiction, sci-fi";

Just a little further down are the settings for the RSS feed, you should set at least the description to match the one you set above and the creator email to be the email address that your site sends mail out on (if you're hosted on PF it will be 'yoursimname@pegasusfleet.net'.

Once you're done with that, save the file and upload it to your hosting, and your site is instantly a lot more searchable.

Step 3 - Speeding Things Up

The next step is to get yourself listed. You can just sit around and wait and eventually a search engine will stumble across your site from a link in the fleet's main site, but if you're an impatient sort you can speed the process up.

Visit DMOZ to list your site. Make sure you find the right category for your game, there are a few of them, but make sure you only suggest your site once or it could get banned or removed! Once listed, some of the search engine spiders will start crawling your site in a couple of hours, others might take longer to get there, but it's still faster than just waiting.
