Staff Warrant Officer, commonly also called Chief Warrant Officer 3rd Class is the second warrant rank, ranking below a Master Warrant Officer and above a Warrant Officer. It has a ranking code of W-2 and is equivalent to a Chief Warrant Officer 3rd Class in the Starfleet Marine Corps. The rank insignia consists of one hollow pip bracketed by a single gold chevron either side.

A Warrant Officer (WO) is an officer in a military organization who is designated an officer by a warrant; distinguished from a commissioned officer who is designated an officer by a commission, or a non-commissioned officer (NCO) who is designated an officer by virtue of seniority.

Staff Warrant Officers are technical officer specialists who perform duties that require expertise and commissioned officer authority to direct technical operations in a given occupational area. Chief Warrant Officers perform duties that are technically oriented - that is, requiring skills directly related to their previous enlisted service and specialised training, while not significantly affecting their ability to perform those duties through advancement to other duty positions and responsibilities — thus allowing Starfleet to capitalize on their experience. All Starfleet Chief Warrant Officers are recruited and accessed from the Chief Petty Officer grades; E-7 through E-9.

Commands

Staff Warrant Officers can and do command detachments, units, activities, small patrol vessels, aircraft, and armoured ground vehicles as well as lead, coach, train, and counsel subordinates. However, the Warrant Officer's primary task as a leader is to serve as a technical expert, providing valuable skills, guidance, and expertise to commanders and organisations in their particular field.
