Construction and Relocation
Starbase 332 was originally designed to be positioned between the border of the Federation and the Ritorian Confederacy. However, midway through its construction, a joint decision between the United Federation of Planets Diplomatic Corps, Starfleet and the Archan Government meant that the station would be relocated to the Archa system, in orbit of Archa IV, to act as a protectorate station and trading outpost for the region.
The station's relocation served to reassure many of the species in the immediate vicinity of their safety from incursion by the Ritorians, who had been beginning to aggressively raid systems close to their borders.
The stardock was finally commissioned in 2370 to be the frontline station in Galactic South and all vessels operating in Galactic South were redirected to 332 as their forward base of operations. She was to operate at half-complement until decisions were reached about Starfleet's role in the region. The station sat, almost forgotten, in orbit of Archa IV for nearly 16 years.
It was not until the reconstitution of the 11th Fleet in 2386 that the base was to be fully commissioned with its full crew complement and active starships. Captain Tyka, who was originally assigned to the station as Chief Engineer in 2370, was to be permitted to maintain command of the station.
However, in the early months of 2387 Starfleet decided that it would be advisable to upgrade the Station's status to fully operational and assign a new senior staff to the region, one that was more used to dealing with diplomatic and tactical situations. The station was transferred to Commander Alexander Gunning in April 2387. ((Welcome to Archa IV))

The Battle of Thane
By the end of 2388, a private investigator working from Starbase 332 intercepted intelligence suggesting an imminent Ritorian attack on the Federation protectorate Thane system. Starfleet quickly assembled a small fleet at Starbase 332, led by Captain Gunning aboard the USS Antietam, and consisting of the USS Jackal under the command of Commander Von, and the USS Metis commanded by Lt. Commander Nilani Prax. When the fleet arrived at Thane, they were not met by the Ritorian force that they had expected. Instead, they were confronted by a hodge podge fleet of repurposed vessels painted blood red. The Starfleet strike group were then informed that they were in violation of Sojourner space.
Captain Gunning pointed out that the Thane System was a protectorate of the Federation, and not Sojourner space. However, Akurq, the Regent of Thane, had handed tactical and regional control of the system over to the leader of the Sojourners, a woman named Vaishaa. Although official documents had not been filed, it was within their rights as a protectorate to open negotiations with the Sojourners. Captain Gunning insisted on leaving the Jackal in the system until the documents were filed, but the Sojourners instead opened fire.
The strike force was ill prepared for the Sojourner fleet, and soon found themselves on the losing end of the battle. All had seemed to be lost, but the sudden arrival of the USS Vesta was enough for the strike force to orchestrate a retreat. Although most of the strike force was able to withdraw from the Thane System, the USS ‘’Metis’’ was lost with only forty-three members of her crew surviving. ((02.03 - The Invasion of Thane))

Attack on Starbase 332
With the Sojourner sphere of influence spreading in the region, Starfleet knew that they needed to protect their interests and keep them from falling into Sojourner hands. In 2389, in order to better understand how to fight the Sojourners, Starfleet dispatched Commander Brian Ratchford to Starbase 332 to conduct a wargame exercise. The USS ‘’Carthage’’ was tasked with serving as the Sojourner flagship, under the command of Commander Liarra Von, while Commander Ratchford took command of the USS ‘’Jackal’’ and ordered to hunt down the ‘’Carthage’’. The two ships were to simulate combat if they met, with the ‘’Carthage’’ instructed to raid simulated targets and to evade the ‘’Jackal’’. Commander Von was chosen for the mission based on her experience with the Sojourners during the Battle of Thane. Captain Gunning was to remain in command of the station.
During the wargame exercises, however, a Sojourner agent infiltrated the station. Using a few innocuous components that he smuggled through the security checkpoint, he used the station’s own power grid against it. In a bold show of force, the agent enacted a Sojourner plot to destroy the starbase. The resulting explosion was not enough to completely destroy Three Three Two, but it did deal significant damage, resulting in the death of ((NUMBER)) crew, residents, and visitors. Included in the death toll was Captain Gunning, who died saving the life of Nilani Prax. The latter would later be transported back to Trill for major surgery and recover.
The ‘’Jackal’’ and ‘’Carthage’’, which had been engaged when word of the bombing reached them, immediately disengaged and returned to the station to assist with the recovery efforts. By attacking the station directly, the Sojourners had proven that they were a force to be reckoned with, and Starfleet learned that the threat was much more serious than they had originally thought. As the remaining experts in Sojourner tactics, Commander Von was promoted to Captain and named the new commanding officer of Starbase 332. Commander Ratchford would become her new first officer. The Battle of Archa IV
The Sojourner Crisis would come to a close in late 2390. With much of Starfleet’s regional task force tied up dealing with the Sojourner’s failed invasion of Mira, the Sojourner leader Vaishaa assembled her real armada to attack Starbase 332 and complete one of her major objectives throughout the conflict. The invasion fleet departed from Thane and set course for the Archan system.
As soon as word of the fleet’s buildup and departure reached Starbase 332, Captain Von and her crew went to action to prepare for the station’s defense. Civilians were evacuated to the emergency shelters and members of the 14th Marine Battalion aided station security in securing critical areas of the station in preparation for possible boarding parties. Word of the impending invasion was sent to Cestus III, and Admiral Quinn hastily assembled a new task force to relieve the station. But the fleet would not be able to arrive before the Sojourners, meaning the station would be forced to fend for themselves until help could arrive.
The Sojourner fleet arrived in the late evening, station time. Captain Von’s brief discussion with Vaishaa was unable to sway the latter’s decision to attack, and soon after the Sojourners opened fire. The station returned fire, but the small Sojourner ships and fighters were able to evade much of the station’s phaser fire. Fighters launched from the station engaged the Sojourner ships. Eventually the sustained fire from the Sojourners were able to deplete the station shields, and armed boarding parties beamed aboard and engaged the marines and security officers. A direct hit on one of the main spacedock doors opened a breach into the dock, which was soon assaulted by Sojourner fighters. A number of Starfleet fighters followed, stopping the enemy from inflicting too much damage from within.
Despite the heavy damage to the station, Starbase 332 was able to inflict considerable losses on the Sojourner fleet. As the battle raged over several hours, concentrated phaser and torpedo fire was able to destroy most of the Sojourner attackers. But the damage to the station was taking its toll, and main systems were beginning to fall. Captain Von was on the verge of considering surrender before it was too late to protect the lives of those still on the station. But before she could contact Vaishaa’s ship, a number of new warp signatures appeared near the station’s outer marker. The Starfleet task force had arrived, led by Admiral Quinn and her flagship, the USS ‘’Vesta’’. With the timely arrival of reinforcements, the remaining Sojourner forces were quickly routed. Vaishaa’s flagship was destroyed in the ensuing fight, with the Sojourner leader presumed dead. The Sojourners had been defeated, and the station remained in Starfleet’s hands. In Popular Culture
- The popular series of holonovels "Threshold" are loosely based on the early years of the Federation in Galactic South in which Starbase 332 features heavily.
- Many Federation citizens know of the Starbase as the location of the mysterious deaths of a contingent of Federation & Cardassian ambassadors. At the time of writing, very little is known about the exact nature of the incident but the noted author Thersoan ch'Sas is said to be researching the incident for his latest book.
As of 2191, at least 19 species were represented amongst the thousands-strong crew compliment, including Trill, Human, El-Aurian, Klingon, Bynar, Caitian, Bolian, Vulcan, Tellarite, Betazoid, and others - including several crew members whose parentage is of a hybrid nature.
Although Starfleet crewmembers staff the vital positions onboard Starbase 332, the station is home to a large civilian population, who work in various areas of the station, such as the commercial promenade, where vendors can run shops, restaurants and entertainment suites, amongst others. The station is also a major trading hub, seeing transports from various public and private entities regularly docking with the station and making use of its facilities.
Captain Tyka was originally assigned as commander of the station, having continued his stewardship from the lengthy period of the station's construction. The station's first change in command was brought about in 2387, when Starfleet assigned then-Commander Alexander Gunning as the station's new commander, which brought in an almost complete change of the station's senior staff along with it. When Captain Gunning was killed in an explosion orchestrated by the Sojourners in 2389, command of the station was handed to his first officer, Commander Liarra Von. As of 2393, Captain Von remains in command.

Starbase Air Wing 17
Starbase has assigned to it a division of Starfleet's Fighter Corps, under the designation SVW-17. The air wing is staffed by highly qualified pilots, and are responsible for the upkeep of the stations 242 fighter craft, including 50 Peregrine Interceptors, 60 Razor Interceptors, 60 Scorpion MkII Assault Fighters and 72 Viper Advanced Tactical Fighters. The Air Wing forms a large part of the station's perimeter defence and patrol protocols, and operate flights in the Archan system on a constant basis.
Starfleet Marines 14th Battalion
Starbase 332 serves as the operating base of the 14th Battalion of the Starfleet Marine Corps, also headed up by Colonel S'er'in'e as the ranking Marine on board. The marines form an active part of Starbase operations, and frequently accompany Starfleet personnel on missions aboard the various garrison vessels assigned to the station. The Archan government has also given the battalion special permission to conduct training exercises on the planet surface.
The battalion comprises four companies in addition to the Headquarters/Command company; each led by a company commander who reports directly to the marine commanding officer.
Starfleet Academy Adjunct Campus
Starbase 332 is also home to one of Starfleet Academy’s adjunct campuses. In addition to serving as a satellite campus for cadets unable to relocate to Earth, Starbase 332’s campus also provides the opportunity for cadets to shadow officers through an internship program. Cadets also receive real experience on training cruises aboard the USS Wainwright.
