Physiology

A Koldaran Soldier

Koldaran begin their lives as six inch long nearly featureless tadpoles born from eggs. As they age and mature, their length and mass multiply until they are three years old, when they emerge from their spawning pools as youngling creatures. They possess a soft, slimy lateral symmetry body with an internal shell rather than true skeleton. Koldarans are born into a caste of sorts where they appear very much like their mollusk ancestry. Slightly protruding eye stalks and a lipless mouth with simple proto-teeth for grinding their food, Koldarans that survive a full tour in the fighter-corp are allowed to elect to undergo an adult metamorphisis to enter into the officer pool. This literal apotheosis alters their physiology to appear more defined, more humanoid, and more resistant with each promotion promising more physical development, longer life, increased intellect, and more political power. Koldarans are genetically predisposed to accept the orders of an Officer caste

Government

The Koldaran Expanse is ruled over by a council of admirals that decide the future of the species. From this central authority, the orders and motives of the entire military of the species is determined and carried out. The actual location of the Admiralty is a closely guarded secret. Society: There is very little in Koldaran society that does not also further the drive of the species. The rare form of art or literature, music or poetry exists that isn’t also a wartime cadence or a propaganda poster, but for the most part, every ounce of creativity and design goes into furthering the military engine. The constantly growing population of any Koldaran controlled world all but demands their expansion into the rest of any system, and then beyond. With problems such as food supplies and power being solved by the discovery of technologies such as replicators and fusion power, the only thing remaining that the Koldaran need is space. So they view every expansion as a liberation. Soldiers are taught to lay down their lives for the glory of the Koldaran Expanse. Officers weigh each battle before they commit, but almost every facet of Koldaran society exists to either further the war, or prepare the next wave of soldiers. Whatever society or history they had before their turn to expansionism is lost to history, if indeed they every anything more than what they have become.

Economy

The base unit of currency used by the Koldaran is the Basic Economic Unit (BEU) that can be traded for goods, supplies, and even transfers to other postings or bids for positions. Due to the near constant state of conflict that the Koldarans are in with neighboring societies, the BEU does not openly trade on any digital market.

Family

Koldarans are mass breeders, laying clutches of fertilized eggs into massive breeding pools. The eggs eventually hatch into larvae that are almost impossible to identify as sapient creatures. These larvae undergo major stages of metamorphisis until they reach three years old, where they emerge from the spawning pools as bipedal infant Koldarans. Six months later, they are ready to enter society and gain an education. At eight years of age, they begin to contribute to society in any way they can. By twelve, they’re preparing to enter the draft to join the military force and can be seated in a fighter by as early as sixteen years. Koldaran society uses retired veterans, specially trained care-givers, and non-combat capable members as brood parents, watching over the young until it is their time to enlist.

Religion

Koldarans have no religion. There is no higher authority than the Admiralty board. In some way, the service to the Admiralty is something of a religion to them.

Language

The native language of the Koldarans is difficult for non-Koldarans to replicate. They can speak and understand most other languages.

Food and Entertainment

Koldaran foodstock is slightly above ‘Tasteless paste’ on the cuisine scale. They consume mold and fungus with meat thrown in to flavor. Their entertainment usually consists of war-stories of past victories, approved movie media, films of previous wars, and the occasional re-enactment of a great war.

Science and Technology

The Koldaran Expanse is very well versed in the fields of battle. Their primary armament is the Proton Bolter, a handheld weapon that fires highly excited bolts of semi-cohesive protons at the target which inflict damage via heat and radiation transfer to the target. Not too dissimilar from a phaser, except that the Proton Bolter does not have a stun setting. Similar weapons, scaled up, are mounted on their fighter craft and main ships as well. Complimenting their energy weapon arsenal is their physical weapon developments, which consist of standard torpedo mount projectile weapons. Slightly less impressive than the standard Federation photon torpedo, they still are nothing to be trifled with or taken lightly. Koldaran shield technology isn’t as advanced as Federation tech, but their belief is the presence of a strong offense supersedes the need of a defense. Their reliance on fighter swarms to confuse, damage and hinder enemy vessels is backed by their high population growth. Koldaran ships often have plenty of fighters to harass any enemy, and they care little for the losses incurred. Soldiers piloting damaged fighters will often aim for the enemy vessel, to strike one last blow before leaving this universe. Koldaran communication technology is also top notch due to their having to coordinate fighter swarms in addition to all the comm traffic a starship is likely to deal with. Their communications systems are notoriously hard to jam or patch into thanks to their encryption technology. Military: The military is the core of the Koldaran way of life. Children enter into their lives, and are taught how to fight, who to fight, and who they fight for. Koldaran military power is very organized and regimented. Everyone knows their place, and who their superior is. Officers are more than leaders, while the Admiralty board might as well be their gods.
