While testing a few of the systems that Discovery's on-board engineering teams have had to finish or install on-the-job and away from drydock, the ship receives what appears to be a distress call in a language not on any Starfleet or Vulcan databanks, and the captain sets a course to investigate. Coming upon a vessel crewed by beings who appear to have a reptilian ancestry and call themselves 'Cardassians', the crew learn that the distress call, although genuine, was not sent under the orders of the captain of the vessel, but rather by one of his engineers.

Eager to try and make friends wherever possible, the crew must try to persuade these staunchly proud and stubborn people to accept their help, and try to open dialogue between the two races.
